Governor Viesca's Eleven Leagues & the Post-Oak Country Estates
Before Texas won its independence in 1836, Coahuila y Tejas Governor Jose Maria Viesca was granted eleven leagues of prime timber and grazing land spanning western Leon and Robertson counties. In the 1960s and 1970s, joint ventures and corporate developers carved the old post-oak ranches of the Viesca (A-30), John Belden (A-55), and Robert Rogers (A-228) surveys into resort lots and 10-to-40-acre recreational tracts, reserving the deep mineral estate in the corporate grantor.
“What sold in 1978 as a quiet post-oak deer-hunting tract off I-45 now sits directly above 350-degree, 12,000-PSI Western Haynesville horizontal gas wells.”
